From 1 May 2025, Upwork sets a Freelancer Service Fee between 0% and 15% on each new contract. The rate appears when you propose or accept an offer and stays locked for that contract.
Legacy sliding tiers (20% / 10% / 5% by lifetime billings with a client) do not apply to those new contracts. Always read the % on the offer screen—do not assume 10%.
After the service fee, withdrawing to Payoneer, a local bank, or another rail can take another cut. Model that as payout fee in the calculator if it is not already netted in Upwork’s available balance.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Upwork still a flat 10% fee?
- No. On new contracts from 1 May 2025 the Freelancer Service Fee is variable between 0% and 15% per contract. Many freelancers still see rates near 10%, but you should enter the exact % shown on your offer.
- How do I calculate Upwork take-home pay?
- Multiply the client amount by (1 − your contract fee). At 10%, a $1,000 contract leaves about $900 before any withdrawal fee. Use the calculator above to add payout cost or reverse-price a bid.
- How do I know what to charge on Upwork after fees?
- Divide your target net by (1 − fee %). Want $900 after a 10% fee? Charge about $1,000. Switch the worksheet to What to charge for exact cents.
- Does this include Connects or Freelancer Plus?
- Not yet. This worksheet models marketplace service fee, optional payout fee, and a personal set-aside. Connects and membership are separate cash costs.
