Formula

Take-home ≈ client amount × (1 − service fee %) − payout fee. To hit a target net: charge ≈ target net ÷ (1 − service fee %).

Frequently asked questions

Is Upwork still a flat 10% fee?
No. On new contracts from 1 May 2025 the Freelancer Service Fee is variable between 0% and 15% per contract. Many freelancers still see rates near 10%, but you should enter the exact % shown on your offer.
How do I calculate Upwork take-home pay?

Using the Upwork take-home worksheet

Upwork connects clients and freelancers on hourly and fixed-price contracts. Before money reaches your bank, Upwork usually takes a service fee, and your withdrawal method may take another cut. Use the calculator above for live numbers; this section walks through modes and habits that keep quotes realistic.

What freelancers usually lose on the way to the bank

On marketplace contracts, the headline rate is not what lands in your account. From 1 May 2025, Upwork’s Freelancer Service Fee on new contracts is variable between 0% and 15%—shown on the offer and locked for that contract. After that, withdrawing to Payoneer, a local bank, or another rail can add another cut.

That is why quoting $50/hour can still feel like ~$40/hour after fees. PayQube’s default Upwork profile asks you to enter the contract % from Upwork. A separate 10% planning estimate is available for rough quotes only—it is not an official flat default.

Hourly vs fixed-price on this worksheet

Use Project mode when the client pays a single amount. Use Hourly mode when you bill a rate and a number of hours. In “What I keep,” you enter the client-facing amount or rate. In “What to charge,” you enter the net you want after fees, and the worksheet backs into a client price.

If you also set aside money for taxes or buffer, that is a personal reserve on this site—not a tax filing. Income tax, self-employment tax, and VAT rules differ by country. Confirm those with a qualified advisor where you file.

How to use the Upwork calculator

1. Open your Upwork offer or contract, copy the Freelancer Service Fee %, and enter it under Marketplace fee (Variable profile).

2. Choose a payout rail only if withdrawal cost is separate from the marketplace fee; otherwise leave Payout on None.

3. Read the large result first—You keep or Charge the client—then skim the breakdown.

Always double-check live fees on Upwork before you send a formal quote. PayQube is an independent worksheet and is not affiliated with Upwork.
